Year 6
Year 6 is the last year in primary school, and it isn't just about SATs!
Yes, we work very hard towards them, but we don't let them get in the way of anything else we do. We have some fabulous topics in Year 6 including: WW2, evolution and adaptation, space, the golden age of Islam, our bodies, rivers and bridges, and where our food comes from.
In September we spend an action-packed week in Keswick, throwing ourselves off waterfalls, scrambling up rivers, sailing, kayaking... you name it! As well as being a great team-builder, this also develops independence and confidence. We also work towards the John Muir award, which ties in nicely with our rivers and sustainability topic.
Sport
We take pride in our sporting achievements at Milnthorpe Primary. In recent years we have been Primary Challenge Cup Champions twice, we are current Northern Lacrosse Champions, and we came 11th at the Lacrosse National Finals! We are currently South Lakes Netball Champions and Dallam-Cluster Netball Champions and Sportshall Athletics Champions.
The Outdoors
As well as our week-long residential at the start of the year, we also head for the hills throughout the year too - even wild camping and mountain biking when the summer arrives! We carry our own packs, learn how to navigate, pitch our own tents and cook our own food. To link with our rivers topic we follow the source of the River Rothay upstream to find its source on the side of Heron PIke!
Cooking
We all learn how to cook! Each week in the summer term, we plan, prep and cook a savory dish from scratch. We make our own pizzas, from scratch; we make our own pasta, from scratch; we make curries and fish fingers and a whole host of other healthy meals... and then we eat them!
Theatre Production
Every summer, the Year 5 and 6 put on a theatrical performance! Every year seems to get bigger and better, with superb singing, acting, dancing and lighting.
London
At the end of the year we visit London for two days. This links in nicely with our citizenship and British values curriculum. We visit the Houses of Parliament, go to the theatre and see as many sights as possible before we catch the train home... and for the past two years, we have - no word of a lie - bumped into the queen!
